Throw a Doctor Who season premiere party!
Most of you don’t know this about me, but I’m a MAJOR Whovian. Hubby and I have watched all of the 2007 reboot of Doctor Who at least a few times and have been starting in on watching all the original series. We are lucky to have many Whovian friends, so we threw a huge bash for the 50th anniversary episode, The Day of the Doctor, back in November.
With the Doctor Who Premiere coming up in just a few weeks on August 23, 2014, I thought I’d share some photos, recipes, and ideas from our party so you could throw your own Doctor Who season premiere party. I’ll apologize in advance for the photo quality. I took them all with my old cell phone and wasn’t planning to blog them later.
I’ll start out with a few of our decorations:
Cosmos Room
Here’s the main floor of our house. It’s super open and goes right from the front door sitting area into the dining room and kitchen. We decided to stick with a cosmos/TARDIS blue/Matt Smith’s 11th doctor theme.
We got some TARDIS blue table cloths from the dollar store along with these blue star swirls that were simple to hang from the ceiling and went with our cosmos theme. Clocks were also brought in from around the house for the food display.
11th Doctor Table Setting
Here’s a close-up of the table:
Materials:
- TARDIS blue table cloth
For each setting: - Black circle placemat
- Red Solo cup
- Silver square dinner plate
For the bowties: - Red dinner napkin – 13″ rectangular “guest towel” napkin or a square napkin folded in half
- 5.5 inches of 1.5″ wide red ribbon- attached around the napkin (wrap after you scrunch it) with a bit of double-stick tape on an end
- The silverware was later tucked into the napkin bows.
I wanted to evoke the bowtie and fez of Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor:
TARDIS Front Door
The front door was probably my favorite. I may have left it decorated for a whole two weeks after the party. 🙂
Materials:
- TARDIS blue plastic table cloth
- Printable “Police Public Call Box” sign (this took a few tries to get the size right for our door)
- Printable Pull to Open sign (source: steelgohst.deviantart.com)
- Printable St. John Ambulance badge
- 12 small, white paper rectangles (for the windows)
- Double-stick tape (for all front details)
- Masking tape (to tape the table cloth to the door)
Directions:
Tape the table cloth over the door, carefully cutting and taping around the hardware.
Print out each sign to the correct size for your door and attach with double-stick tape.
Note that this will run/fade if it gets wet, so to make a more permanent TARDIS door, you may want to laminate the signs first.
The games:
We had a few games/crafts for people to play while we hung out for most of the afternoon watching the 50th anniversary pre-show specials.
Decorate an Adipose
The adipose show up in season 4, episode 1. They’re little humanoid blobs of fat that look a lot like these marshmallows. Everyone enjoyed decorating them.
Materials:
- Large and mini marshmallows
- Blue food color marker
- 1/4 recipe of royal icing (to glue the mini marshmallows to the adipose body
Make Your Own Fez
Materials:
- Red construction paper
- Red pipe cleaners
- Pom poms
- Sequins
- Glitter
- hot glue
- markers
Directions:
You can pre-cut the base fez’s or let people cut out their own. I made this one quite a bit too small, so keep in mind you want them to fully sit on the head like Matt’s does in the photo above. Pull out the craft supplies and let everyone decorate them as they want. Bonus points if they wear them while watching the show.
Doctor Who Snowflakes
I found a lot of great tutorials for nerdy snowflakes linked up here at fanbloomingtastic.
The Food:
Lady Cassandra Lasagna
Lady Cassandra shows up in season 1, episode 2. She’s the last remaining human on earth and really just looks like this stretched piece of flesh. The cheese in this lasagna does a great job of imitating her look.
Directions:
Make your favorite lasagna recipe as directed. Before baking, spread the cheese out with an irregular edge, carve a mushroom or bell pepper into a pair of lips, and use a couple thin apple slices with olive slices on top for eyes. Bake as directed. Enjoy!
Dalek Bread
Dalek’s are the sworn enemies of The Doctor. A friend brought this garlic bread over to share. Isn’t it creative?
Materials:
- Gluten-free pizza crusts
- Butter
- Roasted garlic
- Sliced jalapenos
Directions:
Cut bread into a Dalek shape. Spread butter and garlic over the bread. Decorate with jalapeno slices. Bake until toasted. Exterminate!
Galaxies in a Jar
These jello galaxies in a jar sparkle in the light and have all sorts of stars and planets swirling in them. They were a blast to make. You can find them over at Bakingdom.
That’s about everything we had at our party (I was aiming for fun, but cheap), but if you’re looking for a lot more ideas, go check out my Doctor Who Party Pinterest board below!

I think I love you! These ideas are so cool (ideas are cool!)
I have tried the marshmallow adipose and Dalek bread but a Cassandra lasagne – that’s genius! With her Uni friends my daughter had a party and they also taped a crack on the wall and ate fish fingers and custard (but they chickened out and used mayonnaise with a little yellow food colouring!)
I love the front door – I might have to make ours like that permanently!
Enjoy the new series!

The Cassandra lasagna was totally a huge hit. You could probably even buy a frozen one and decorate it if you were in a rush. I love the idea of a crack on the wall! That would be genius with the Matt Smith theme. I’ll have to do that in a few weeks. As for the fish fingers and custard, I’ve tried it and it’s horrible. The colored mayo was a much better choice. I’ve also seen it done with lady finger “fish” fingers and custard so it’s all sweet.

I haven’t ever seen any of the Doctor Who series, but I have some friends who are super into it. 🙂 Your party looks like it was a lot of fun.
Thanks for sharing this with us in the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party!

Thanks for posting! These are fantastic ideas! We are having a “Season Premiere” party this weekend and I want to do some of this! I am struggling with figuring out how to print the “Police call box” sign, as when I print it on 1 sheet, it is too small, but I can’t get it to print different sections of it on multiple sheets so that it is the right size for a door. Any suggestions?
Stephanie Powers says
Lisa, you are totally right – it’s HUGE! Sorry about that. I have Acrobat pro which lets me tile it to 3 pages instead in the print options. I updated the file to the 3 page version with cut marks. Just print and cut it apart then tape them together to have a good width for your door. 🙂

THANK YOU, STEPHANIE! That is perfect!! 🙂
